About Me

I am a native of Selma, NC but now resides in Jacksonville, NC as a retired teacher of 25 years.  I grew up in a family of ten where my parents were church leaders and musicians. From the children’s choir to the university choir, from local talent shows to national singing competitions, I always knew that I had a gift to minister in song. I often stated, “I do not take my gift lightly because I know that God has given me an instrument to use for His glory.”

In 2004, I was diagnosed with cancer. A malignant tumor the size of a golf was removed form my lower jaw area. After weeks of radiation and training on how to stretch my mouth, singing became a challenge but I knew I could not give up. So, today, I am cancer-free, proudly sharing my story and showing the scars that tells my story as I continue praising my way through even with the challenges I yet face with lock-jaw. I can't give up now. I have a story to tell to encourage others.

In addition to singing, I enjoy hosting my TV show with my brother, bowling, riding my bike, cruising with my family, riding the train, fishing, outdoor activities, and quiet time rocking on my porch.

Debara Jenkins-Blackwell is married to Elder Robert T. Blackwell. with one child, Robert III. In 1997, we established New Hope Church of God in Christ in Maysville, NC, where I served as the minister of music for 25 years.
