Dr. Tamara Moodie is the founder of South Florida Autism Charter School (SFACS), the largest and only school of its kind exclusively for children with autism in south Florida. SFACS provides education and therapeutic services to individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) residing in Miami-Dade/Broward Counties, targeting students with communication deficits and/or behavioral challenges and who may require training in self-help skills. She has over 28 years of experience in the field. Dr. Moodie was born in Kingston, Jamaica, to Ms. Eunnes Beswick and Mr. Daniel Moodie and migrated to the USA in 1982. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Master of Arts in Special Education from Carlos Albizu University and a Ph.D. in Education/Administration from Capella University. Dr. Moodie has brought awareness to the community through hosting events and workshops. She started the Annual SFACS Walk in 2013 which takes place during Autism Awareness Month in April. Every year she presents approximately 60 community workshops geared towards families and covers autism topics from a through z. She has also fostered partnerships with NOVA University’s Dental program, Miami Dade College School of Education, Keiser University’s Occupational Therapy Program, and Carlos Albizu University Education Program to name a few. She recently joined CHIEF, a network of Top Women in Business Leadership, and received recognition from Miami Dade County Public Schools as a Pioneer in Education in April 2024. Dr. Moodie was the 1st recipient of the Educational Leadership Award in 2021. She was honored as part of Legacy Magazine’s “Top 25 Most Influential & Prominent Black Women in Business,” Legacy Magazine’s “40 under 40” as well as “2011 Woman of Excellence'' by Nostalgia in Gold, Inc. Dr. Moodie has an autism podcast titled “Autism 411” where she features parents and professionals speaking about their journey through autism and what the general public does not know. She is a newly published author of her first book titled, “I Am Still Like You Autism Through My Point of View.” Dr. Moodie is currently the Executive Director of South Florida Autism Charter School, South Florida Autism Center, Friends of South Florida Autism and Villages of South Florida Autism.
