The Women Half Way Home Foundation was first started in July of 2016 as the brainchild of Melanie Cheatham-Witt. Melanie has worked in the Ohio Department of Rehabilitations and Corrections as a correctional officer in both men's and women’s correctional facilities and saw the need to further rehabilitate due to the number of repeat offenders coming back to the prison system. Many times people would be re-incarcerated because they had no structure in their lives and had never been taught to be self-sufficient, due to drug or alcohol use, and breaking the law to support their habits. Melanie had also been a foster care provider, adult developmental disabilities provider and has adopted three children of her own. She fully recognizes the need to guide residents that have been separated from their children, regarding both the child’s perception and parents feelings about re-entry into the child’s life.
