Ms. Joy Phillips Sangster

(Seamstress)

About Me

My Name is Joy Phillips born and raise in a beautiful Island of Jamaica.

I was born to Calda Phillips of Kingston Jamaica and Lillian Mcdonald of St Thomas Eastern Jamaica. I am a mother of five children and proud grandmother of seventeen grandchildren. I migrated to the Republic of Panama in my late 20s, where I met and married my husband, the late Lenard Sangster. During my years in Panama, I accomplished my certificate in fashion designing and other specialties such as upholstery and interior decoration.

I migrated to the United States in late 2000 with no intention of becoming a business owner. I wanted to be a nurse so, I started caring for the elders in their homes, which I did for a few years. My kids kept encouraging me to use my talent, which I had no desire to. After making a few uniforms and outfits for my daughters, who were in the healthcare industry, I participated in a fashion show at my local church, where I made a dress for one of my church sisters. As she walked down the aisle during the fashion show my late son-in-law, who was in the audience, shouted "My mom did that!" That shout changed the view of the entire audience. After the show everyone wanted to know who this person was and, that's where I got introduced to more church members. Thereafter, I was getting requests to do work for others.

Opening up a business in sewing was an inspiration from God my father. God's plans for me were different than what I had for myself. During my years of studying fashion and interior decorating I had no desire to open a business or create fashion for others. This was an intention for my personal needs, but it was not what God desires; so here I am today, a business owner of JPS Designs Point 0 LLC.

PS. To God be the Glory.
