I grew up in North Carolina, mainly in Alamance County. I obtained both a BS in Animal Sciences and a BA in Religious Studies from North Carolina State University in 2007 as part of the Thomas Jefferson Scholars Program. I was involved in undergraduate research while at NCSU and was afforded the opportunity to intern at PIC Genetics and USDA-MARC. From NCSU, I traveled to Iowa State University where I obtained my PhD in Genetics, with a focus on Livestock Genetics and a minor in Statistics. My dissertation was "The effect of selection for residual feed intake during the grow/finish phase of production on feeding behavior traits and sow reproduction and lactation efficiency in Yorkshire pigs."
