I earned a BPS in Therapeutic Recreation from SUNY Brockport in 1981. Upon completion I became a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist CTRS and worked as a Recreational Therapist ever since. I later earned a MS from the University of Tennessee in 2007 in Therapeutic Recreation. I had no idea that one of my most rewarding roles as a Recreational Therapist would be caring for my mother who was living with dementia. I provided 4 years of care for my mother utilizing everything I knew and practiced as a Recreational Therapist. My goal? Be sure my mother had a great quality of life and to stay at home. That goal was accomplished through recreational therapy. During those 4 wonderful years, I discovered that people living in the community do not have access to recreational therapy as a treatment option.
