Treatment Patterns Among Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis in Puerto Rico.
Rheumatology and Therapy · Jan 24, 2022Racial and ethnic disparities in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have been identified in the United States, with higher levels of disease activity and worse functional status reported in Hispanic patients compared with their white counterparts. Although RA is one of the most prevalent health conditions in Puerto Rico, few studies have previously examined the characteristics or treatment patterns of patients receiving biological and targeted synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (b/tsDMARDs) in this population.Racial and ethnic disparities in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have been identified in the United States, with higher levels of disease activity and worse functional status reported in Hispanic patients compared with their white counterparts. Cytotoxic screening of Thioredoxin Reductase inhibitors as a potential new anti-cancer drugs Cytotoxic screening of Thioredoxin Reductase inhibitors as a potential new anti-cancer drug. XXX Annual Research Forum on Health Research and Education, UPR- Medical Sciences Campus, School of Pharmacy. Poster presentation · Jan 1, 2010
The development of new anti-cancer drugs that target and inhibit TrxR1 could prove to be a valuable chemotherapy tool. We hypothesized that rational-designed molecules containing a cyclic 1,2-disulfide unit as a pharmacophoric group will selectively block TrxR1 activity and will inhibit tumor growth in breast ccancancerer.

Research forum: Bio-EXPO 2010, at UPR- Bayamon. · Jan 1, 2010Research forum: Bio-EXPO 2010, at UPR- Bayamon. · Jan 1, 2010The objective is to develop new benzodithiolane derivatives and compare the activity with benzodithiine derivatives that were previously synthesized and shown to inhibit the redox-enzyme thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). Inhibition of this enzyme by benzodithiin derivbatives has been shown to inhibit proliferation of cancer cells. Due to increased ring strain, the new benzodithiolanes are expected to be more reactive and more potent than benzodithiines.

Oral Presentation · Jan 1, 2009This work describes the synthesis of two novel classes of compounds that interfere with the activity of the redox-enzyme thioredoxin reductase and were shown to inhibit in vitro breast cancer cell growth. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in women 40-55 years of age, and it is the second major cause of cancer deaths for women in the United States.

Poster presentation. · Jan 1, 2006Low temperature has been previously proven as a trigger for airway hyperactivity leading to asthma. It is also well known that asthma is related to an inflammatory response in the airways where reactive oxygen species are known to be generated. Although the physiological mechanisms of cold induced contraction have been studied, no association has been made between cold induced contraction and ROS.
