TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Haley has a fifteen-year (university) academic career teaching creative writing, Women in Literature, Intro to Women's Studies, Contemporary International Fiction, et. al., most recently as associate professor of English at Mary Washington College. At the secondary level, she has taught 11th grade American Literature, creative writing, and Freshman Composition in both private college-preparatory as well as public schools. She has published poetry and literary criticism in a variety of journals and anthologies including Poetry, The Gettysburg Review, Reading Poetry: An Anthology of Poems; Southern Poetry Review, and Mid-American Review. Her collection of poetry, The Logic of Wings was published by Cherry Grove Collections in 2004. Haley's Instructor's Manual for Harcourt Brace's College Division (FICTIONS: AN ANTHOLOGY OF SHORT STORIES) has been used by university literature professors since 1989. Her essay on psychotherapy and poetry appears in POETS ON PROZAC: Mental Illness, Treatment, and the Creative Process, edited by Dr. Richard Berlin, M.D. (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2008).

MY TEACHING STYLE

College/University level: lecture, guided discussion, group discussion. Secondary level: combination of short lectures, guided discussion, student presentations and group activities. I like to incorporate visuals (power point presentations and film) into my class lectures/discussions.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Haley was awarded Individual Artist Fellowships in Literature from both the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the Delaware Division of the Arts. She has also received Fellowships from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and the Astraea Foundation.
